Growing up in poverty in Kampala, Phiona (Madina Nalwanga) is lured by the prospect of free porridge to learn chess, a game which she turns out to be very good at. With a terrific young cast, and firm direction by Mira Nair (Mississippi Masala, Monsoon Wedding, and Salaam Bombay!), Queen of Katwe is a refreshing and uplifting film from one of the big American studios.
