Satyajit Ray’s finely-drawn study of city life in 1950s India, and of the effect on a traditional family of a modern younger generation in which the daughter-in-law takes employment as a saleswoman. With remarkable sensitivity and attention to the details of everyday working-class life, the film constructs a powerful human drama that is at once a hopeful morality tale and a commentary on the identity of the contemporary Indian woman.
