In the same summer as Woodstock, the Harlem Cultural Festival took place over six weeks and featured an extraordinary line-up of African-American artists. From a youthful Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, and a duet from Mahalia Jackson and Mavis Staples, through to B.B. King, Max Roach, Sly and the Family Stone, and Nina Simone, Summer of Soul is an incredible record of Black musical and political culture in 1969, the legacy of which is still with us today.
