"a passionate humanist statement… about an exemplary human being" Roger Ebert

The authoritarian but deeply human physician Kyojô Niide (‘Red Beard’, played by Toshiro Mifune) runs a century-old clinic in rural 19th century Japan. He treats his patients the old way, soul along with body. When new young doctor Noboru Yasumoto arrives and tries to apply his new Dutch medicine, Red Beard guides him along a different path. It is Kurosawa’s masterpiece about the meanings of life and death.
