"Klaus Maria Brandauer’s performance is so multi-layered, it captures that essence of the actor’s psyche, which is invention and role playing." Eye for Film
Based on Klaus Mann's novel, Mephisto tells the tragic story of the rise and fall of a Faustian character, the provincial actor Hendrik Hoefgen, who sells his soul to the Nazi regime in exchange for greatness and personal success. The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
"The film is brilliant and enthralling, a whirlwind of color and motion that suggests its protagonist's rapid success and self-absorption." Filmreference
