Director: Károly Makk, Hungary 1971, 88 mins, PGA young woman whose husband has been arrested by the secret police under the Hungarian tyrant Mátyás Rákosi in the 1950s, tells her sick mother in law the fantastic tale that her son Janos is pursuing a career as a Hollywood. A visual gem!

“Makk’s moving and insightful but entirely unsentimental film focuses on the way personal relationships endure under such oppressive regimes…. The central characters are brilliantly acted … it is beautifully shot in sharp black and white by Janos Toth, and Makk experiments effectively with rapid, fleeting cuts to convey the characters’ individual perspectives”  Sight and Sound

“a brilliantly powerful film that both captures the sense of dread that comes from living under a totalitarian regime; and expresses the feelings and plight of his characters in a perfectly poetic way” Bonjour Tristesse
