Programme category: Forest Row Film Society
Director: Raoul Peck, USA 2017, 93 mins, 12A“A kaleidoscopic and transporting ninety minutes living inside James Baldwin’s mind.” Variety
A radical, powerful and thought-provoking analysis of race relations in America, based on an unfinished manuscript by James Baldwin which describes the lives and assassinations of his friends Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. Baldwin’s words are voiced by Samuel L Jackson and the film uses archive footage that perfectly represent the civil rights era.
“You would be hard pressed to find a movie that speaks to the present moment with greater clarity and force, insisting on uncomfortable truths and drawing stark lessons from the shadows of history.” New York Times
