Director: Jim Jarmusch, USA 1986, 107 mins, 15
"Jim Jarmusch’s deliciously deadpan third feature … looks more than ever like a milestone in American independent cinema" Time Out
One of the cult films of the 1980s, alternately melancholy, comical, desolate and optimistic. Tetchy, raspy radio DJ Zack (Tom Waits) and bottled-up, sleazy would-be pimp Jack end up in prison for being too casual to avoid being framed for crimes they didn’t commit. They end up sharing a cell with an eccentric, cheerful Italian, Roberto, who leads the misfits out of jail, finds happiness himself and leaves the other two to their different roads ahead.
"Jarmusch has … a miraculous gift for finding a dreamlike emptiness in cities, in which his characters and we, the audience, wander, as if in a lucid dream." The Guardian
