Suggest a film
- What films do you think we should be screening?
- Have you seen something recently that you think would go down well in Forest Row?
Add your suggestions in the comments box below and we’ll look at them. If you can say a bit about the film too, that will be very useful.
‘St Trinian’s’ – this has to be the most hilarious British comedy ever invented! A group of school girls must steal a priceless piece of art in order to keep the school because of debts. It’s so funny, it doesn’t seem real. Starring Russell Brand, Mischa Barton and Anna Friel. Rated ’12’.
Hi Brad – have you seen “Moon”? I’m not a sci-fi freak but I saw this recently and thought it a fine film.
May see you tomorrow afternoon.
Terry
The new St Trinian’s is certainly available from Filmbank. Can’t find Moon, but I would expect it to be available soon.
It would be great to have some lighter films in the programme, maybe some matinees, though we’ll need a few more helping hands next season to do that. Any takers?
The Moliere by Ariane Mouchkine A JEWEL!!!!!!! Also I thought it would be nice to show films with themes that the children study at school . For ex there is a film about Michelangelo with Kirk Douglas forgot the name ! Would be good!
I also suggest KAOS by the Taviani brothers, a gem.
Death in Venice by Visconti
The shop around the corner (Lubitsch) – wonderful
and for children of course Peau d’Ane by J Demy a gem as well, more films for children would be great like a special screening 2 sundays per month for ex……
I have many other in mind obviously.
And tons of ideas for a festival which I tell you now I want to be part of and active in it….if you want of course
Wow, thanks Cathie. Lots of things to look out for there. I remember seeing Kaos years ago and loved it.
Apart from festival time, we have about 2-3 screenings a month at the moment. Maybe for next season we can work out a children’s programme that includes, say one a month and see how that goes (not least in terms of getting people to help out). It would also be good to do a few more Saturday films, slightly more mainstream than our Fridays, plus some classic 40s/50s Sunday matinees as well.
Great that you are keen to get involved. Maybe next year we can have a film festival as well?
I would second the request for Moon. Great film. A more ambitious endeavour would be a sci-fi season. You could include some great movies such as 2001, Solaris, Silent Running, Darkstar, The Black Hole… the list goes on. You could even run Wall-E as a matinee.
Ian
Like the ideas. Would that be the new Solaris, or the Tarkovsky? I think it is the only Tarkovsky that we have never shown. And I’ve always liked Silent Running.
The main issue for us extending the scope of the type of films we show will be working out how best to try and target the audience for them. We’re good at our core world cinema offering now, but need to do better on other types of film. Nothing we can’t solve though.
I was thinking the Tarkovsky version of Solaris, but perhaps George Clooney has more appeal! In which case, you should show O Brother, Where Art Thou? as well.
I’ve always thought that the American actor Jeff Bridges is a very under rated performer. I’d like to see any of the following: “Fearless”, “Cutters Way” or “Door in the Floor”
Can’t agree with the other correspondents who are asking for ‘Moon’. I saw it at the Trinity in RTW last month and couldn’t wait to leave. Dull, repetitive, naff special effects, and wooden acting.
As for ‘Solaris’, the Clooney version is a quite interesting whilst the original Tarkovsky film is ponderous.
As a new member I would like to suggest ‘Milk’. An outstanding film which I think everybody should see. It provides an insight into the political scene and gay movement in San Francisco in 1977 which is powerfully put across by the superb acting of Sean Penn.
I have seen one film with FRFS so far, am not yet a member, but would like to suggest a film. ‘Raise the Red Lantern’ is the most beautiful film I have ever seen, my absolute favourite, and unavailable on DVD. Directed by Zhang Yimou, based on a short story by Su Tong, it is the tale of a young woman who becomes the forth mistress of Old Master Chen Zuoqian. If you were able to get hold of it to show, you would have my undying gratitude.
Thanks Frances. Milk certainly had some good reviews and is available from Momentum, so that’s one we should consider for next season.
I agree too with LD. Raise the Red Lantern is wonderful. We screened it over fifteen years ago, so there is no reason why we couldn’t do so again. The BFI may still have a good 16mm print though may not have the rights any more. Alternatively, a US DVD could probably be acquired, if we could arrange for the licence to screen it with the rights holder (whoever that is, MGM?). Or the MPLC may be able to license it.
It would be wonderful to see Raise the Red Lantern again, especially on a big screen, where one can properly appreciate the stunning colour composition. I have my fingers crossed that you are able to get hold of a print/high quality DVD , and will be there with bells on, and all my friends, if you can!
I recall a film, ‘The Barbarian Invasions’. It is about a dying left-wing professor. His well-off son wants to ease his father’s path into the next world. It is a Canadian film (French language – directed by Denys Arcand)
Robert Aldrich’s Kiss Me Deadly
all too many to suggest but off the top of my head;
The Earrings of Madame De… – Max Ophuls
After the success of the BFI’s re-release of Letter from and Unknown Woman, i’m sure this other Ophuls masterpiece would be well received.
It would also be fantastic to expose Indian cinema, anything by Ritwik Ghatak or Satyajit Ray I feel would be a wonderful addition and a treat to those unfamiliar with these directors.
I love Max Ophuls, and Letter from an Unknown Women is on our shortlist for next season.
Ray has always been popular here, though I don’t think we’ve shown any since Days and Nights in the Forest about six years ago. We had a little run of other Indian film a few years ago too, and they were certainly well received, though we’ve not shown any Ghatak yet. We should. Thank you.
Mademoiselle Chambon opened in NY a few months ago. Doesn’t seem to be scheduled for release here yet, but it does look like perfect Forest Row material.
[…] like last year, we’d like some suggestions for what to screen next […]
