Silent films draw big crowds
Two very different silent film programmes attracted big crowds during the Forest Row Festival yesterday.
The first screening, of silent Laurel and Hardy comedies, drew the biggest audience ever for a Film Society event. Packed to capacity (including a dog), there was uproar during the hilarious films, which had fantastic musical entertainment provided by Anna Cooper, Sarah Homer, Terry Davies and Jonathan Truscott.
Yesterday evening saw a screening of the marvellous 1926 Faust, directed by F.W Murnau, and with music by Terry Davies. The audience were captivated by the astonishing special effects, the camera work and the lighting of this beautiful film.
