Venue: (see Locations and Tickets for further details)

Programme category: Forest Row Film Society

Director: Xhanfise Keko, Albania 1977, 78 mins, PG

"Albania’s greatest female director Xhanfise Keko spins a classic boys’ own adventure yarn, but in a style as raw and authentic as anything from the Italian neo-realists. Never before seen in the UK, freshly restored, this is a rare discovery." Mark Cousins/Filmhouse

Tomka is a boy who likes playing football with his friends. When the German army captures his town, the German soldiers establish their camp in the town stadium. Tomka with help from his friends and their parents organises sabotage actions against the soldiers.

"Perhaps because the children’s genre did not call attention to itself the way that adult feature films might, Keko was able to fill Tomka with many stylistic devices that would have been discouraged for higher-profile filmmakers toiling in the system." Thomas Logoreci
