In this quiet, nuanced masterpiece,an extraordinary family exists on the margins of Tokyo society. They survive through petty crime but the question of morality is far from obvious especially when the young Juri is taken under their wing. In an emotional finale, however, we find we don’t know this family at all. Powerful stuff!

“Delicately observed and perfectly played, it’s consummate flawless film making.” The Times
