Hi,

This is a long shot. I’m a filmmaker based in Bristol, but I grew up in Forest Row and this is where my family currently live. I’m looking for a venue to watch the premier of a documentary I shot and produced. The film is being transmitted on the 29th December 2010 on BCC1 at 8pm. It’s called Polar Bear – Spy on the Ice.

It would be great to hire out the film societies facilities to watch the transmission. Assuming your HD digital projector can be connected to BBC 1 HD freeview. I’m looking for a venue that can seat at least 30 people (family and friends). Let me know if you think you can help.

Mademoiselle Chambon opened in NY a few months ago. Doesn't seem to be scheduled for release here yet, but it does look like perfect Forest Row material.

I love Max Ophuls, and Letter from an Unknown Women is on our shortlist for next season.

Ray has always been popular here, though I don’t think we’ve shown any since Days and Nights in the Forest about six years ago. We had a little run of other Indian film a few years ago too, and they were certainly well received, though we’ve not shown any Ghatak yet. We should. Thank you.

all too many to suggest but off the top of my head;
The Earrings of Madame De… – Max Ophuls
After the success of the BFI’s re-release of Letter from and Unknown Woman, i’m sure this other Ophuls masterpiece would be well received.
It would also be fantastic to expose Indian cinema, anything by Ritwik Ghatak or Satyajit Ray I feel would be a wonderful addition and a treat to those unfamiliar with these directors.

I recall a film, ‘The Barbarian Invasions’. It is about a dying left-wing professor. His well-off son wants to ease his father’s path into the next world. It is a Canadian film (French language – directed by Denys Arcand)

It would be wonderful to see Raise the Red Lantern again, especially on a big screen, where one can properly appreciate the stunning colour composition. I have my fingers crossed that you are able to get hold of a print/high quality DVD , and will be there with bells on, and all my friends, if you can!

Thanks Frances. Milk certainly had some good reviews and is available from Momentum, so that's one we should consider for next season. I agree too with LD. Raise the Red Lantern is wonderful. We screened it over fifteen years ago, so there is no reason why we couldn't do so again. The BFI may still have a good 16mm print though may not have the rights any more. Alternatively, a US DVD could probably be acquired, if we could arrange for the licence to screen it with the rights holder (whoever that is, MGM?). Or the MPLC may be able to license it.

I have seen one film with FRFS so far, am not yet a member, but would like to suggest a film. ‘Raise the Red Lantern’ is the most beautiful film I have ever seen, my absolute favourite, and unavailable on DVD. Directed by Zhang Yimou, based on a short story by Su Tong, it is the tale of a young woman who becomes the forth mistress of Old Master Chen Zuoqian. If you were able to get hold of it to show, you would have my undying gratitude.
