About Forest Row Film Society

Fundraising: Digital Equipment

heart of the community award logo

Forest Row Film Society was founded in June 1978 with the purpose of screening great world cinema and has been delivering this for nearly thirty years. We also wish to extend the audience further by screening films that appeal to as wide a sector of the community as possible, especially young people and the older generation. Ideally, we would also like to have the flexibility to screen films in other locations, including outdoors, and to screen films more frequently. We would also like to screen silent films with an orchestra, and to work with other local groups to utilise the equipment to arrange screenings with them.

At present we still rely on 16mm prints of films. There is now only one reliable source of such prints in the country (the British Film Institute), and it is now very rare for any new prints to be made. In addition, the BFI's rights to distribute many of these films are expiring, which means that the selection of films to choose from is getting much smaller each year.

To take us forward and to ensure we could source films that would have an appeal to a wider target group, as well as maintaining our existing core audience, we need to buy new exhibition equipment. This primarily means a digital projector, but this will also necessitate the purchase of a new, large screen and to upgrade the sound system. Such equipment for a space such as the village hall is expensive, and we are fundraising and seeking grants from a number of organisations.
